The triumph of Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco (1-0 after extra time) will be etched in memory not only for the fierce battle on the pitch but also for the controversies swirling around it.
A particularly divisive issue emerged within the Teranga Lions’ camp: allegations of a possible poisoning incident affecting Senegalese players before the match.
In the wake of this continental victory, Senegalese defender and international player Ismail Jakobs added fuel to the fire by claiming he suspected foul play had impacted three of his teammates, namely Krépin Diatta, Ousseynou Niang, and Pape Matar Sarr. He recounted “frightening” scenes where players allegedly collapsed and struggled to hold their heads up before the match, asserting it was “not an ordinary food poisoning.”
Nevertheless, no medical evidence or independent investigation has substantiated these claims. Neither the Confederation of African Football (CAF) nor any local health authorities have released findings suggesting any chemical or deliberate attack on the players.
Despite the vague accusations from the Senegalese Football Federation and some players, others have dismissed these claims. Idrissa Gana Gueye, a pivotal midfielder, has firmly rejected the rumors in Senegalese media.
He emphasized that the team had their own chef throughout the tournament and maintained strict dietary controls, effectively quashing any notion of poisoning during their time in Morocco.
