Former Deputy Governor of Enugu State and gubernatorial aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye, has asked the Enugu State House of Assembly to enact a law that will make the sobriquet, ‘Enugu State is in the hands of God,’ the official motto of the state.
The state’s official sobriquet is ‘Coal City State,’ but Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi ever since he assumed office in 2015 has used ‘Enugu State is in the hands of God’, not as a motto, but as a signature phrase in his official outings.
Speaking shortly after meeting with the Speaker and members of the House of Assembly, Nwoye said that Ugwuanyi’s use of the phrase was responsible for the existing peaceful atmosphere in the state, noting that even Britain and United States of America use ‘God Bless the Queen’ and ‘In God We Trust’ as their sobriquets, respectively.
“So I’ve come to the Enugu State House of Assembly, for them to introduce ‘Enugu State Is In The Hands of God’, as a motto for Enugu State, the capital of the south east and Enugu State is indeed in the Hands of God, the South East is in the Hands of God. So, I’m here to see them and I’ve seen them and I pray to God that they will look into why I came to speak with them about a legacy to be left by the present Governor of the state.
“I came to see the Speaker to let the House of Assembly know what Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is leaving behind as a legacy for the state, for them to consider making it as a bill that ‘Enugu State Is In The Hands God’ to be Enugu State motto.
“If you look at America, they have in their money ‘In God We Trust’, they started with God. In Britain, they have ‘God Bless the Queen’ and all they do is trust in God in all they are doing. So, for Ugwuanyi to have come in to say Enugu is in the hands of God, his faith has guided him and that has made Enugu state peaceful, no matter one crisis or the other, it’s natural, but in this past six years plus Enugu state has been peaceful.”
Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Information, Jeff Mba said that the House received Rev Nwoye, listened to him and will deliberate on the proposal.
“He has submitted his proposal, we received it. When the House reconvenes we will look into it. It was like a correspondence and the Speaker received it. It’s when we threat it that we can tell you what our response is; It’s when we debate it that you can say the House has responded,” Mba said.
