A new partnership between telecom operator Vitel Wireless and fintech firms OPay and Moniepoint is set to widen access to airtime and data services across Nigeria, particularly in underserved communities, amid persistent concerns over digital inclusion.
The companies said the collaboration would allow millions of users to purchase airtime and data directly through their fintech wallets and banking platforms, a move analysts say reflects a growing convergence between financial services and telecommunications.
Chief operating officer of Vitel Wireless, Chudi Nwabueze, said the initiative builds on existing partnerships with traditional banks while extending reach through fintech platforms with deeper grassroots penetration.
“Vitel Wireless continues to showcase the close collaboration between financial services and telecom services, by extending their partnership model with traditional banks such as Fidelity Bank and Zenith Bank, to fintech giants such as Opay and Moniepoint,” Nwabueze stated.
While the nation’s fintech platforms have increasingly become critical distribution channels for telecom services, especially in rural areas where traditional banking and telecom retail infrastructure remain limited.
Nwabueze added that the integration is designed to simplify user access. “Through this integration, customers can conveniently top up airtime and purchase data bundles using their existing fintech wallets or banking platforms, eliminating barriers to access and improving overall user experience,” he said.
The firm’s product marketing manager, Odera Ben-Chiobi, linked the partnership to broader inclusion goals, particularly for communities with limited access to digital services.
“This collaboration aligns with our mission to democratize access to mobile connectivity across Nigeria. By partnering with leading fintech platforms like Opay and Moniepoint, we are bringing telecom services closer to millions of Nigerians, particularly in rural areas where access has traditionally been limited,” she said
