A report by Techpoint Africa has raised concerns over verification and onboarding processes used by food delivery platforms Glovo and Chowdeck after journalists successfully created and operated a fake restaurant account using fabricated details.
According to the report shared on X, the experiment involved registering a non-existent restaurant with a made-up tax identification number, false address, and photographs reportedly taken from a real Lagos restaurant.
The publication claimed that within weeks, the fake business completed onboarding procedures, received a delivery device, underwent training, and successfully processed a customer order on the platforms.
The investigation has triggered discussions around due diligence, merchant verification, and consumer safety within Nigeria’s fast-growing food delivery sector.
Observers say the incident raises concerns about how easily fraudulent operators could potentially gain access to digital commerce platforms without adequate background checks.
The report has also intensified conversations around data verification standards and accountability among technology-driven service platforms operating in Nigeria.
