The Vietnam Ministry of Public Security has proposed the establishment of a national database centre aimed at preventing and combating fake news and false information.
Under a draft decree released on Monday, the ministry defined fake news as completely fabricated content, while false information refers to content that is partially untrue
According to the proposal, the centre would receive reports, complaints and denunciations related to fake and misleading information.
It would also verify cases and publicly announce confirmed violations, issue warnings, and provide guidance and clarification to the public.
In addition, the centre would coordinate data sharing and the labeling of fake or false information among ministries, agencies and local authorities to ensure consistency nationwide.
The ministry recommended imposing the maximum penalties permitted under the Law on Handling Administrative Violations.
Individuals found guilty of spreading fake or false information could face fines of up to 100 million Vietnamese dong (approximately 3,850 U.S. dollars), while organizations could be fined up to 200 million dong (about 7,700 dollars), the ministry stated.
