The Senate has questioned the South East Development Commission (SEDC) over allegations that the agency spent ₦153 million on office rent in Abuja, describing the expenditure as a matter requiring clarification and accountability.
During an oversight engagement, lawmakers reportedly sought explanations from the commission’s management regarding its financial records, administrative expenses, and the utilisation of funds appropriated under the national budget.
The Managing Director of the SEDC, Mark Okoye, was said to have defended the commission’s position, indicating that relevant evidence and documentation existed to justify the expenditures under scrutiny.
The development underscores the National Assembly’s constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of government agencies and ensure that public resources are utilised in line with approved budgets and established financial regulations.
As discussions continue, observers say the outcome of the review could contribute to broader conversations around transparency, prudent spending, and accountability within public institutions.
