Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy’s 2027 Tech Scholarship has drawn attention to the costs applicants may face after TS Academy confirmed that scholarship recipients must pay an application fee, even when their tuition is fully covered.
The programme, launched in partnership with TS Academy, offers eligible applicants up to 100 per cent tuition support for technology and digital skills courses.
The academy advertises potential tuition savings of up to ₦447,000, alongside mentorship, internship and job-placement support. Selected beneficiaries may also receive laptops or internet data, subject to eligibility and availability.
TS Academy’s standard application-fee page lists a fee of ₦26,500, with an instalment option of ₦13,250 twice. Its scholarship website says successful applicants will receive a discount on the application fee, but the exact discounted amount is not clearly stated on the main scholarship page.
The fee has prompted questions about whether applicants should pay to access a scholarship opportunity, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.
However, the published terms alone do not establish that the initiative is fraudulent or that its organisers intend to profit improperly from applicants.
A social media post estimated that five million applicants paying ₦26,000 each could generate ₦130 billion.
That figure is hypothetical: no verified evidence reviewed for this report establishes that five million people will apply or that the programme will collect such a sum. At the academy’s listed standard fee of ₦26,500, five million payments would total ₦132.5 billion, but this is a mathematical scenario, not a forecast of actual revenue.
