Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has criticised Mohamed Salah for his recent public outburst over his reduced playing time at Liverpool, warning that the Egyptian is “destroying his legacy” at Anfield.
The 33-year-old has not started Liverpool’s last three matches and did not feature in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United. After the game, Salah claimed he had been “thrown under the bus” and that his relationship with the head coach.
Speaking on his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England captain urged Arne Slot to take a firm stance.
“Slot has to show authority. Pull him in and tell him he’s not travelling; what he said is unacceptable,” Rooney said. “Let him go to AFCON and let everything calm down. If I were the manager, there’s no way he would be on the team.”
Rooney believes Salah must now either resolve his issues with Slot or move on from Liverpool.
“It needs to be sorted out quickly either way,” he added.
Despite scoring 250 goals in 420 games for Liverpool, Salah’s decision to air his grievances publicly has left Rooney baffled.
After Saturday’s match, Salah told reporters, “I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus.”
Rooney questioned the motivation behind such comments, especially from a player who signed a new two-year contract in April.
“He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool,” Rooney said. “It would be sad for him to throw it all away. He’s gone about it all wrong.”
