A fresh controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s hip-hop scene following a public clash between Phyno and emerging Enugu-based rapper Quincy042, after the latter released a diss freestyle that has since gone viral on social media.
In the freestyle that started trending around late January, Quincy fired shots at Phyno, alleging betrayal and poor treatment, while also questioning Phyno’s label/industry relationships and support for younger Eastern artists. He further referenced other industry figures in the same performance, widening the fallout beyond just Phyno.
From the circulating clips and write-ups, Quincy’s main angles are:
Personal grievance: he frames the issue as “betrayal,” including a dispute involving a woman.
Industry/label grievance: he suggests artists around Phyno’s ecosystem were “mistreated” or didn’t thrive, and he hints at credit/recognition issues.
East-coast gatekeeping narrative: he positions himself as pushing back against “gatekeepers,” implying the Southeast music scene has been held back by power structures.
The diss triggered intense debate across Instagram, X, and Facebook, with some users amplifying Quincy’s “gatekeeping” argument and others calling it clout-chasing or misplaced aggression.
Quincy then appeared to double down in follow-up posts, describing the diss as “ordinary free smoke” and warning critics not to “push” him into releasing “real smoke.”
As of the latest publicly available chatter, there’s no clear verified statement from Phyno directly addressing Quincy’s claims, most of what’s circulating is fan commentary, influencer takes, or third-party posts urging people to “hear Phyno’s side.”
