A social media post circulating online has sparked fresh debate over the operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its handling of corruption cases involving Lagos State officials.
In a widely shared video clip, a commentator, yele sowore alleged that the anti-graft agency rarely prosecutes officials from Lagos State despite handling numerous corruption cases nationwide.
The speaker, Sowore further claimed that the only notable instance of EFCC action involving a Lagos political figure occurred during the tenure of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, suggesting it followed a political fallout with President Tinubu
The remarks also referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging political influence over anti-corruption enforcement in the state. However, no documentary evidence was provided in the video to substantiate the claims.
As of press time, neither the EFCC nor Lagos State authorities have issued an official response to the allegations contained in the viral clip.
The EFCC, established in 2003, is mandated to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes across Nigeria. The agency has in the past prosecuted public officials from various states and political affiliations.
Political analysts note that corruption enforcement in Nigeria often attracts partisan interpretations, especially when high-profile political figures are mentioned.
