Nigeria Demands Two Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa
Pecohub Nigeria has demanded two permanent security council seats with veto power for Africa at the 81st UNGA, adding that the UN cannot remain captive to 1945.
Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt are the primary African countries that qualify for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council. So while the African Union demands at least two permanent seats with veto power for the continent, its gonna be a tough call deciding which specific countries should fill them.
Nigeria is a top contender given its demographic size, economic footprint, and history of leading and contributing troops to regional and international peacekeeping missions.
South Africa is another top contender. A strong economic powerhouse, it is Africa’s representative in the G20, giving it major diplomatic and financial leverage and strong international recognition.
Egypt commands by far the largest and strongest military in Africa. It is a major strategic bridge between Africa and the Middle East. It’s long diplomatic history within the UN and the Arab world is leverage in its own right.
