Athletic Bilbao announced on Friday that Spain forward Nico Williams has extended his contract with the club until 2035, increasing his release clause and effectively shutting down growing interest from LaLiga champions Barcelona.

The extension adds eight years to his existing deal and raises the release clause by 50 percent. The club described the renewal as “a resounding success” in the face of “dizzying offers” for the 22-year-old star.

“When you have to make decisions, for me what matters most is the heart. I am where I want to be, with my people, this is my home,”Williams said in the club’s official statement.

Williams came through Athletic’s youth system and now stars alongside his older brother, Iñaki. Over five seasons with the senior team, he has scored 31 goals and established himself as one of the club’s key players.

His electrifying performances on the wing were instrumental in Athletic’s 2024 Copa del Rey triumph—ending a 40-year title drought—and helped secure a place in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.

Williams’ talent has attracted attention from top European clubs, with media reports linking him to Barcelona and Arsenal.

A regular in Spain’s national team, Williams was named Player of the Match in La Roja’s Euro 2024 final victory over England.
