A massive blackout has plunged Spain and several European countries into darkness, crippling transport networks and cutting off access to the Internet and mobile services for millions.

Pecohub reports that Spain, Portugal, and Southern France are among the most severely affected regions. The power outage, which began around 12:35 PM local time on Monday, has left citizens without electricity supply and caused widespread disruptions.

According to Spain’s electricity operator, Red Eléctrica, efforts to restore the power supply are already underway, but full recovery could take between six and ten hours.

Although the exact cause of the blackout remains officially unconfirmed, early reports suggest that a major incident in France may have triggered the crisis.

The national electricity company of Portugal, REN, identified a fire on Mount Alaric in southwestern France, which damaged a high-voltage transmission line between Perpignan and east of Narbonne, as a possible origin of the failure.

The outage caused a drop in power supply that peaked at one hundred thousand megawatts, affecting not only Spain but also neighboring countries including Portugal, Andorra, France, and Germany.
