When Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez got married in Venice last month, headlines quickly followed — not just about the guest list and the array of couture costume changes, but about the staggering number of private jets that reportedly touched down for the occasion.
Nearly 90 private aircraft landed in and around Venice during the multi-day celebration, according to The Guardian, bringing in some of the world’s richest and most famous to attend one of the highest-profile weddings of the century.
Naturally, images started circulating on social media to underscore the environmental cost of the affair. One in particular — a striking shot of dozens of private jets lined up on a runway — went viral as alleged evidence of the jet-fueled wedding frenzy. But there’s one big problem: the photo wasn’t taken in Venice, and it has nothing to do with the Bezos-Sánchez nuptials.
Fact-checkers at Snopes and others debunked the image, tracing it back to Las Vegas in 2015. It was taken ahead of the Mayweather–Pacquiao boxing match, an entirely different kind of high-profile event that also attracted major private jet traffic. Despite being nearly a decade old, the photo has resurfaced periodically, misattributed each time as proof of different celebrity excesses
That doesn’t mean Venice didn’t experience a real influx of private air traffic. Local authorities confirmed that the city’s airports, along with those in Treviso and Verona, saw a sharp uptick in private jets during the wedding weekend.
Environmental advocates and critics of billionaire tourism seized on the moment, staging protests and symbolic stunts like floating a life-sized dummy of Bezos down the Grand Canal on a giant Amazon box.
At the same time, local officials praised the event for its economic and media impact, estimating a $1.1 billion boost to the region — mostly thanks to the global media exposure. Even so, the viral photo’s spread highlights how quickly misinformation can outpace facts online, especially when it fits an already controversial narrative.
Yes, the Bezos wedding brought an extraordinary number of private jets to Venice. But if you saw that dramatic runway photo and assumed it was taken there, you’ve been misled by an image with no connection to Italy or the newlywed Bezos couple.
