The Italian news agency Nova reported that the head of Italy’s National Civil Aviation Authority, Pierluigi Di Palma, signed six agreements in Benghazi on Thursday during an official visit accompanied by a delegation of business leaders and representatives of specialized Italian companies.
The agreements included an executive memorandum between the Civil Aviation Authority and Benina International Airport Authority for the development of the airport, building on the framework agreement signed with the Civil Aviation Authority in Tripoli, according to Nova.
That December 2023 agreement aimed to expand cooperation in civil aviation and air transport, facilitating and encouraging airlines in both countries to operate charter and scheduled flights.
The other memorandums of understanding signed in Benghazi focused on developing a regional aviation network, purchasing new aircraft, enhancing maintenance services, boosting cargo transport, and establishing a logistics network for transporting goods and personnel in the civil, agricultural, and industrial sectors, the agency said.
The signing ceremony was attended by Belqasim Haftar, head of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund, Italian Consul General in Benghazi Francesco Saverio De Luigi, Fabio Giudici, head of the economic and commercial office at the Italian Embassy in Tripoli, along with representatives of several Italian and Libyan companies.
Di Palma stressed that the agreements mark an important step toward strengthening integration and dialogue between the two countries, highlighting civil aviation as a bridge for cultural exchange and bilateral relations that serve the prosperity and growth of both peoples.
Nova added that the agreements are intended to support bilateral cooperation, which has gained momentum since the resumption of direct flights between the two countries earlier this year through Italy’s ITA Airways and Libya’s Medsky.
