An online controversy has erupted after a social media influencer, identified as B33JAY, alleged that MTN Nigeria offered him ₦500,000 to delete a post accusing the telecom giant of exploiting users’ data.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the influencer claimed he had earlier called out the company over what he described as “stealing data from users,” a statement that quickly gained traction and drew support from other users and influencers.
According to him, the post generated significant engagement, prompting wider conversations around data usage and billing practices among Nigerian telecom subscribers.
He further alleged that he later received a direct message requesting the removal of the post in exchange for ₦500K, an offer he said he declined.
“I will not accept your ₦500,000… stop stealing from Nigerians,” he wrote, insisting that accepting such an offer would mean ignoring a broader issue affecting other users.
The claims have since sparked reactions online, with some users echoing concerns about data transparency in Nigeria’s telecom sector, while others urged caution, noting that the allegations remain unverified.
As of the time of filing this report, MTN Nigeria has not issued an official response to the allegations.
The development adds to ongoing scrutiny of telecom operators in Nigeria, particularly around billing systems, data consumption accuracy, and consumer protection.
