The house of representatives at the plenary Thursday passed through second reading a bill seeking to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, (As Amended) to create an additional Local Government Area in Imo State to be known as; Ideato West Local Government Area.
The proposed legislation sponsored by member representing Ideato North South Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere was presented for second reading by the House leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere.
According to the explanatory memorandum, the First Schedule, Part I of the Constitution is amended by inserting “Ideato West” under the list of local government areas in Imo State as follows; “Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ehime Mbano, Ezinihitte, Ideato North, Ideato South, Ideato West, Ihitte/Uboma, Ikeduru, Isiala Mbano, Isu, Mbaitoli, Ngor Okpala, Njaba, Nwangele, Nkwerre, Obowo, Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema, Okigwe, Orlu, Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, Owerri West and Unuimo.
When put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu who presided over the session, it was supported by the lawmakers and passed.
