The 5th National Para-Badminton Championship, featuring 120 athletes has commenced in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the International Conference Centre Umuahia, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, said the state government had put in place the necessary facilities to ensure the success of the championship.
Ananaba also stated that Governor Alex Otti is steadily positioning Abia as Nigeria’s emerging sports destination.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups, Mrs Ifeoma Thomas described the tournament as a reflection of the governor’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and equality through sports.
Event Manager for the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), Fadil Sayeed, expressed satisfaction with the quality of equipment provided by the Abia State Government.
The Secretary General of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Oludare Davis, also praised the Abia State Government for its support of the sports sector and for bringing national attention to Para Badminton through the involvement of key stakeholders.
