Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS) has disclosed that in the last seven months, between January and July, 2024, it has generated over N35.9 billion.
In the same vein, the service realised over N33.9 billion in the previous year, 2023 when the Peter Mbah-led administration took over the reins of power.
Chairman of the Service, Barr. Emmanuel Ekene Nnamani, disclosed this on Friday while briefing the media on his one year anniversary in office.
Nnamani noted that the revenue came from both informal and formal sector.
He said to achieve the success so far, they adopted six payment gateways to make for ease of doing business and avoid over and double taxation in order not to stiffle business growth.
Nnamani noted that before he assumed office, the people of the state were not used to paying tax but to provide the people with the needed democracy dividends, under governor Mbah, the service adopted different payment outlets.
He explained that their decision was to increase the tax gateways which was one to six, and that the revenue body at inception outlined the blueprint to make it easy for people to pay their taxes without stress.
Nnamani told journalists that the service has activated many taxes that were hitherto dormant, adding that the state also introduced the consolidated e-ticket tax collection system in the informal sector.
He noted that through geographic information system which they bought into the service, the service leadership identified over 290.000 properties in the state.
Nnamani pointed out that they want to make sure that the properties pay land use act which they also activated.
“All we are doing is to make sure that we have ease of doing business in Enugu. There are some dormant taxes that we have activated,” he stated.
Nnamani further disclosed that the service is still making efforts to have an understanding with stakeholders before activating community tax system.
