The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has urged staff and students of the university to prioritize routine medical check-ups to prevent untimely deaths.
Speaking during a health sensitization workshop titled “Promoting Health Awareness and Wellness in the University Community”, Okolie highlighted the impact of harsh economic realities and security concerns on the health of citizens, emphasizing the importance of regular health screenings to monitor and manage one’s well-being.
The workshop, organized by the Directorate of Research and Innovation at ESUT in collaboration with Utopian and KEDI Health Care groups, provided free medical screenings for members of the university community.
Okolie encouraged the ESUT community to avoid attributing health challenges to superstitions, urging them to follow medical advice and prescriptions to address their health issues effectively.
In her remarks, Professor Harmony Nzeribe Nwobodo, Director of ESUT’s Research and Innovation Centre, explained that the workshop was prompted by the increasing cases of untimely deaths within the university. She emphasized that a healthy workforce is crucial for productivity and encouraged staff and students to participate in the outreach to improve their health status.
Nzeribe expressed gratitude to the university management for supporting the initiative and appreciated Utopian and KEDI Health Care groups for their role in extending free medical services to the ESUT community.
Speaking at the event, Ugochi Eze Okeke, Leader of Community Outreach for Utopian Health Care, urged the university community to prioritize their health and maintain a balanced diet.
Similarly, Elder Dr. Okechukwu Uwaelelam, a consultant with KEDI Health Care, noted that most health challenges result from poor dietary habits. He advised participants to pay attention to their food choices and eating patterns, engage in regular fitness exercises, and avoid overworking themselves.
The sensitization workshop underscored the need for proactive health management to ensure a vibrant and productive university community.
