Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, Barr. Loyld Ekweremadu, has said that the state government is planning to build an Olympic size swimming pool at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Sports Stadium, Enugu.
Ekweremadu also said that the state government will also refurbish and rehabilitate the stadium as well as improve the facilities at the Sports Council Secretariat.
The Commissioner disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu by the Director of Press of the ministry, Dan Onwuegbuna.
According to the statement, Awgu Games Village will equally receive attention in the year.
Ekweremadu noted that the essence of constructing the Olympic size Swimming Pool at the Stadium is part of the preparation for Enugu State hosting the 2026 Sports festival.
“Government has planned to build an Olympic size Swimming Pool, at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and rehabilitate Indoor Hall, of the stadium,” he said, adding that, “Enugu state government has earmarked the sum of N10 billion for the refurbishing of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
“Three billion for Awgu Games Village, N200 million for the upgrade of Sports Council facilities, at Nkpokiti Road, Independence Layout, Enugu. “
Ekweremadu who was reeling out the achievements of his ministry last year equally pointed out that, “We are already discussing with a reputable Consultant, who will partner the state to organise the marathon.
According to him, the ministry is expecting international athletes from all over the world to participate in 2025 marathon’.
