Singer-rapper Doja Cat has spoken up about her mental health, revealing that she has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD).
In a TikTok video on March 14, the Grammy-award winning singer reflected on years of masking her true feelings and how that eventually took a toll on her mental well-being.
“I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay,” said Doja Cat. “I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me, and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, BPD is a “mental health condition characterized by pervasive patterns of instability in mood, self-image, and interpersonal relationships, as well as marked impulsivity.”
“Individuals with BPD often experience intense and rapidly shifting emotions, have difficulty regulating their emotions, and engage in impulsive behavior, including recurrent self-harm and suicidality,” the description added.
Doja Cat admitted that the condition has been a long-standing challenge in her life, saying that she has been struggling with BPD for “probably forever” and describing the experience as deeply difficult.
“It’s an agonizing condition, [but treatable], thank God. I’ve been in therapy for years now. I am so relieved and so proud of myself that I’ve made it so far. I still make mistakes, but it is like an 8-year process of curing, treatment, and healing,” she added.
The revelation is not the first time the artist has been open about her mental health. In an October 2025 appearance on the IRL podcast of Angie Martinez, she shared that therapy has been an important part of her routine, helping her ensure she stays emotionally grounded.
At the time, she said she attends therapy so she can make sure she is “all right” and is “talking about everything that I need to talk about.”
Earlier, in a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Doja Cat revealed that she also lives with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which led her to leave high school at the age of 16.
“It felt like I was stuck in one spot and everybody else was progressing constantly,” she said then.
In the same TikTok video, Doja Cat also addressed recent criticism directed at fellow artist Chappell Roan who had drawn attention online after being filmed recording paparazzi who continued to photograph her despite asking them to stop during Paris Fashion Week.
Doja Cat expressed admiration for Chapell’s openness in showing discomfort and setting boundaries in public. “I am witnessing a lot of people be upset with [it], disclaimer I am not diagnosing Chapell Roan with BPD. What I’m saying is that there is a connection to the way people are treating Chappell Roan for showing her discomfort or showing unamusement, her disdain. I love that she does it. I love that she can be uncomfortable, comfortably in front of people, and protect herself, and be honest.”
The singer said Chappell’s authenticity resonated with her, especially after years of struggling to be truthful about her own feelings. “I had to learn how to be honest. I had to learn how to be honest with myself. I lied to myself for years, for most of my life, and to see her sit there, I love it.”
