Céline Dion, the powerhouse French-Canadian vocalist, is returning to the stage after she revealed she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in 2022.
After the devastating diagnosis, the music legend canceled the remainder of her tour dates for 2023 and 2024. Now, the 57-year-old hitmaker is set to return to performing in France after a lengthy hiatus.
According to French outlet La Presse, Céline will be performing two shows a week in September and October at Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre, which seats up to 40,000. In 2024, she sang a rendition of Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne A L’Amour in front of the Eiffel Tower during the Olympics opening ceremony.
The emotional 2024 performance marked her first return to the stage since being diagnosed with SPS.
The rare and progressive autoimmune neurological disorder causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms, and typically affects adults in their 40s and 50s, with the majority of those living with SPS being women.
Stiff Person Syndrome can also lead to chronic pain, mobility loss, and falls, as well as trigger sensory sensitivity to sound, which proved dangerous as Céline was in the middle of her Courage World Tour at the time her condition was discovered.
Céline’s comeback residency was confirmed after mysterious posters featuring track names of some of her hits, like The Power of Love and My Heart Will Go On, were spotted around Paris, leading fans to speculate that something was coming from the beloved singer.
She was originally scheduled to perform at Paris La Défense Arena back in 2020, but the performance was postponed due to the COVID pandemic, and then shelved indefinitely. She revealed her medical condition.
