The countdown to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 gained a fierce and friendly new face on Monday with the unveiling of the tournament’s official mascot, ‘Assad’—Arabic language for ‘Lion’.
Jointly presented by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Local Organising Committee, Assad was inspired by the majestic Atlas Lion, a powerful national symbol of Morocco and an icon of strength and unity across the African continent.
A statement on the CAF website described the mascot as an ambassador who embodies the joy, passion, and energy of Africa’s most prestigious football tournament.
With a friendly and youthful design, Assad’s expressive features and vibrant colour palette align with the official tournament brand, reflecting the warmth and diversity of African football.
“Assad will play a crucial role in building an emotional connection with audiences of all ages,” CAF stated, highlighting its central role in fan engagement across stadiums, fan zones, and community events. It will also feature prominently in global marketing campaigns, digital content, and interactive experiences throughout the competition.
Beyond the 2025 finals—scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026—CAF plans for Assad to serve as a long-term ambassador for African football.
The mascot will support grassroots and youth development programs, school initiatives, and future digital storytelling efforts aimed at inspiring the next generation.
The announcement marks a key milestone ahead of the tournament, which recently confirmed that clubs must release players for national team duty by December 15, 2025.
With Assad leading the way, CAF said the stage was set for an unforgettable celebration of unity, pride, and the power of African football in Morocco.
