Women from diverse groups in Anambra State on Thursday rallied in Awka in support of the proposed Reserved Seats for Women Bill, a constitutional amendment aimed at addressing gender imbalance in Nigeria’s legislative institutions.
The bill seeks to create additional seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to promote inclusive governance.
The women gathered at the constituency office of Oby Lilian Orogbu, who represents Awka North and South Federal Constituency, where they signed and submitted a petition backing the proposal.
Receiving the petition on her behalf, Barr. Oge Ekweozor assured the group that their demands would be conveyed appropriately. She expressed optimism that the bill would progress through legislative processes and receive assent from Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at the event, Amara Muojeke , a barrister of the International Federation of Women Lawyers stressed the need for unity among women, describing the bill as long overdue and urging swift action by leaders.
Also speaking, Mrs Theresa Nnalue of the National Council of Women Societies highlighted the importance of women’s participation in governance, noting that special seats would help overcome barriers such as limited financial resources.
Several women-focused groups, including the National Association of Women Journalists and the League of Women Voters, participated in the rally, reaffirming their commitment to sustained advocacy until the bill is passed.
