Abuja Police Detain Officers Accused of ₦40,000 Extortion
Pecohub The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it has identified and taken into custody officers who allegedly extorted a businessman.
The officers, according to the businessman, extorted N40,000 from him along the Wuye–Utako Road, near Salem Church, Abuja.
In a viral video, the businessman said the officers stopped his vehicle and accused him of covering his car number plate, an allegation he denied.
He said the officers demanded a N50,000 bribe, adding that he negotiated it down to N40,000
In a statement, the FCT police command said the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, was drawn to the video, prompting an investigation into the allegations.
According to the Command, the officers depicted in the video have been identified and are currently in custody as the investigation continues.
The police also appealed to the businessman to visit the FCT Police Command Headquarters to provide a formal statement concerning the incident, which the command said would assist in taking appropriate disciplinary action.

The command said it would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or any form of unprofessional conduct by its personnel.
It further assured the public that any officer found culpable after due investigation would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action in accordance with extant laws and regulations.
The command urged residents of the FCT to report cases of police misconduct and provide relevant information that could assist ongoing investigations.
It reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, professionalism and respect for the rights of all residents of Abuja.
