The Teqball Federation of Nigeria (TFN) has disclosed plans to make the national Teqball competition international and attract more global attention.
This is as Team Abia emerged victorious in the men’s singles and men’s doubles at the just-concluded first national Teqball competition held in Aba, Abia State.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the first national Teqball competition, sponsored by the Abia State government, the TFN president, Habu Ahmed Gumel, said the body would make the event international by attracting more countries from outside Nigeria to participate in future competitions.
Gumel, represented by the Vice President of the TFN and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the first National Teqball League, “ABIA 2026”, Ndudi Edede, appreciated Governor Alex Otti for hosting the competition.
He said that while the inaugural edition attracted participants from 18 states across Nigeria, subsequent editions would attract more participants.
“This is the first edition, and we’re able to attract 18 states to attend the event. So subsequently, in the second edition, we aspire to have more states and probably more countries.”
He said that Abia was chosen to host the competition “because Abia at the moment seems to be the safest state in Nigeria. Also, we have a working governor that is sincere and purposeful in his leadership style; he’s top-notch.
“We presented our proposal and what we want, and he believed in our project, and he gave us approval and asked us to come here. So that’s why we came to Abia, and we’re happy to be in Abia.”
He disclosed that, on March 16, Abia was given commendation by the International Federation of Teqball for hosting the tournament, adding that Abia was the first state in Nigeria to receive such recognition from the international body.
Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, assured the commitment of the state government to supporting and sponsoring sports events and developing sports in Abia.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mrs Jane Igwe, the commissioner thanked Governor Otti for his sustained support for sports and sporting activities in the state.
“I want to thank our sports-loving governor, who has been a strong supporter of sports.”
He thanked all the participants, including the coaches and referees, among others, for making the event a success.
The representative of the South-East on the board of the TFN, Victoria Nlemigbo, said the tournament was more than a competition.
She expressed her gratitude to the Abia State Government and Governor Otti for sponsoring and supporting the competition.
Team Abia, led by Kahleed Yahaya and Funsho Sampson, emerged victorious in the men’s singles and men’s doubles, respectively.
Musa Joshua and Gladys Abasi of Team Rivers won in the women’s singles and mixed doubles, while Team Delta topped the table in women’s doubles.
