The Nigerian Government is set to promote the deployment of biogas technology in abattoirs and related facilities across Nigeria following a partnership between the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA).

The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja to strengthen collaboration in applying biotechnology to environmental health protection and public health. They also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on the development, training and deployment of biogas technology in abattoirs and related facilities.
The partnership is expected to address waste management challenges, promote sustainable energy generation and create economic opportunities by converting organic waste into useful resources.
Speaking at the event, the Registrar of EHCON, Dr Yakubu Mohammed Baba, described the partnership as an important step towards addressing environmental challenges through inter-agency collaboration.
He said the initiative would help transform waste management challenges into opportunities for wealth creation and employment, while improving environmental sanitation and protecting public health.
Baba highlighted the technological and research capabilities of both agencies, expressing confidence that the collaboration would deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He stressed the importance of harnessing science, technology and institutional cooperation to develop practical solutions to environmental health challenges.
In his remarks, the Director-General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, welcomed the partnership and commended EHCON for its commitment to establishing a formal framework for cooperation between the agencies.
Mustapha emphasised the role of biotechnology in improving environmental sanitation, advancing waste-to-wealth initiatives and supporting sustainable energy production.
He disclosed that NBRDA had developed technology with potential applications in abattoirs and related facilities, adding that the agency was ready to support its deployment and ensure the effective implementation of the agreed initiatives.
The proposed deployment of biogas technology is expected to enable the conversion of biodegradable waste generated in abattoirs into useful energy, while promoting improved waste management practices and environmental protection.
The signing of the MoU and MoA marks a formal step towards closer cooperation between EHCON and NBRDA in research, technology application, capacity building and the implementation of environmental health initiatives.
