Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche has signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with China-based Rona Therapeutics for an experimental treatment targeting obesity and metabolic diseases.
The deal is valued at up to $1.16 billion, excluding potential royalties.
Under the agreement, Rona will receive up to $100 million in upfront and near-term milestone payments, with a further $1.06 billion potentially payable if the treatment meets development, regulatory and commercial milestones. Rona is also eligible for royalties on global sales.
The experimental therapy uses RNA interference (RNAi) technology to target the ALK7 protein in fat tissue.
The approach is being investigated for its potential to reduce visceral fat while preserving lean mass. Its effectiveness and safety will need to be established through clinical development and regulatory review.
The deal strengthens Roche’s effort to compete in the growing obesity-treatment market, currently dominated by major drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.
