Elon Musk’s xAI Buys Dot.com Ahead of OpenAI’s Dots Launch

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has acquired the dot.com domain, in a move that has triggered speculation about a possible jab at OpenAI and its chief executive, Sam Altman.

The development came shortly before OpenAI unveiled a new AI agent called Dots on September 29, 2026.

The dot.com domain currently redirects visitors to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot. Domain records indicate that the address was transferred to xAI in July, several months after the domain became available for a new owner.

The timing has led to speculation online that Musk or his team deliberately acquired the domain after learning about OpenAI’s upcoming product name.

However, there is currently no public confirmation from xAI that the purchase was intended as a prank or to interfere with OpenAI’s launch.

The domain could also have been acquired for conventional commercial reasons. Industry observers noted that “dot” could potentially capture users who mistype “bot,” providing a straightforward reason for xAI to acquire the address.

The speculation nevertheless gained traction because xAI does not appear to own several other obvious typo domains, while the more direct dots.com domain remains associated with another entity. 

The episode adds another layer to the longstanding rivalry between Musk and Altman. Musk was an early co-founder of OpenAI before leaving the organisation in 2018. He subsequently founded xAI, which competes with OpenAI through its Grok chatbot and other AI products. Musk has also pursued legal action against Altman and OpenAI over the company’s transition toward a for-profit structure.
