For many users, it handles all personal banking needs. Its maps help navigate around the world. And for a lot of people, smartphones have become the control center of their digital life.

The durability of phones is another element to consider. Due to both economic reasons and the fact that the gap between device generations has started decreasing, consumers are starting to keep their devices longer. Manufacturers are well aware of that, and producing a device that can withstand drops, water exposure, and years of use is part of their retention strategy.

Overall, this is the moment when we see the beginning of the multiyear transition period. The manufacturers that will succeed in the future will be those that execute the complex task of creating something that connects hardware, software, and services seamlessly and allows people to interact with their devices intuitively.

It is the smartphone’s emergence as the indispensable operating system for daily life—an always-present platform that connects, anticipates and increasingly manages the ways people work, pay, travel, communicate and live.
