The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, on Saturday formally declared his intention to seek a fifth term in the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration ceremony, held at the Mallawa Eid Ground in Zaria, attracted a mammoth crowd, with supporters embarking on a solidarity walk through major parts of the city before converging on the venue.
Abbas, who has represented Zaria Federal Constituency since 2011, said his decision to seek re-election was based on his record of performance, impactful representation and commitment to the development of the constituency.
He said: “Today, I formally declare my intention to seek another mandate to represent the good people of Zaria Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. This declaration is not based on promises alone. It is based on work. It is based on results.
“This is not the time for uncertainty. This is not the time for experiments. This is the time to consolidate the progress we have made together.
“Our youth need more opportunities. Our traders need stronger support. Our farmers need improved security and infrastructure. Our schools need continued investment. Our communities need sustained development. And I remain fully committed to that mission.
“I am ready to continue this work. I am ready to deepen the progress we have made. I am ready to continue representing you with dignity, focus, and results. This campaign is not about one individual.
It is about the future of Zaria Federal Constituency. It is about ensuring that our people remain connected to opportunities at the national level. It is about strengthening the voice of our constituency within the leadership of Nigeria.”
The Speaker highlighted several constituency projects and empowerment programmes facilitated during his time in office, including the distribution of vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, agricultural inputs and financial support to constituents.
According to him, over 2,400 beneficiaries received direct financial support, while thousands of students also benefited from scholarship programmes valued at about N5 billion.
Abbas also cited the establishment of the Education City project in Zaria, valued at about N80 billion, as part of efforts to improve access to education and boost development in Northern Nigeria.
On healthcare, he said several primary healthcare centres were facilitated across communities, while a newly completed 100-bed Specialist Hospital was recently commissioned in the constituency.
He further highlighted his legislative achievements, noting that before becoming Speaker, he sponsored 74 bills, 21 of which were signed into law.
The Speaker added that under the leadership of the 10th House of Representatives, over 2,000 bills had been introduced and considered, with more than 180 passed and over 50 signed into law.
Speaking at the event, the Speaker commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as courageous leadership and commitment to reforms aimed at repositioning the country.
“Leadership is not always about easy decisions. Sometimes it requires sacrifice, patience, and the courage to take responsibility for the future. President Tinubu has shown that courage,” he said.
Speaker Abbas also praised Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for promoting peace, stability and development in the state.
He thanked the APC leadership at all levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths and supporters across the constituency for their continued support.
The Speaker urged constituents to support his re-election bid, saying continuity in leadership was necessary to sustain ongoing development projects and attract more opportunities to the constituency.
