Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled 20 electric-powered mass transit buses under the newly introduced Abia Green Shuttle Service, marking a major milestone in the state’s transport sector.
With the launch, Abia has become the first state in Nigeria to deploy electric buses for commercial intra-state transportation, setting a new standard for sustainable public mobility.
The rollout fulfilled a pledge made by Governor Otti in October to introduce an electric vehicle-based public transport system designed to modernise urban transit and support environmental sustainability.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the initiative was described as a transformative step aimed at overhauling public transportation while positioning Abia as a leader in clean mobility solutions nationwide.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s broader and futuristic vision for a modern and sustainable public transportation system, which aligns with global best practices, climate change and environmental sustainability goals,” the statement partly read.
Ukoha noted that the project underscores the administration’s commitment to transitioning away from conventional fossil fuels in favour of cleaner energy alternatives.
“The State under Governor Otti has embraced the future over and above PMS, Diesel and CNG,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the state government plans to procure a total of 100 electric buses to serve Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia, supported by newly constructed, state-of-the-art transport terminals.
“The first batch of 20 electric buses acquired by the State with 10 charging infrastructure equipped with persons with disability solutions will be operational before the end of the year.
“A second batch of the same quantity is expected to be delivered by early next year with an additional 10 charging infrastructure,” Njoku had said
