A striking story is coming from the border of England and Wales. The world’s leading experts in diving, marine biology, technology, construction and investment are working flat out in a water-filled quarry on the border between the two countries to create an underwater home.
The underwater project is called Deep.
The mission statement for the Deep project is excellent and begins by saying, according to the Finnish media outlet Ilta Sanomat: “The world was searched for the perfect location for a site where an underwater residential structure can be built and tested that will allow for a permanent human presence under the sea from 2027”.
The underwater modules are called sentinels, and will initially be the homes of researchers and for anyone who can afford to rent them.
They also reveal the main goal of this project: “The goal is to live in the ocean, permanently and to inhabit the oceans around the world, as a dream of a new Atlantis.”
“The units can withstand pressure at depths of up to 200 metres, where sunlight is extinguished and the twilight zone of the sea begins with all the creatures that live in the depths,” they add.
The first experiments with underwater settlements were carried out years ago, in the 1960s. However, now, with technologyit is “possible to continue where we started back then, studying the human psyche and physiology, as well as the oceans themselves”.
This project is funded by an investor who has paid up to hundreds of millions of euros for it, but without revealing his identity.
