The federal government has said that it remains committed to improving rural electrification through the provision of sustainable energy solutions.
Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abubakar Aliyu made this known on Thursday during the commissioning of a 100 kilowatts Solar Hybrid Mini Grid in Uhuafor Nomeh, a community in Enugu State.
In his address, Aliyu said that the project was facilitated through the Federal Government’s Rural Electrification Fund (REF), a mechanism designed to promote off-grid electrification and ensure that electricity is equitably distributed across Nigeria.
Aliyu, who was represented by the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund, Dora Uboh said that the facility will power over 3000 households across the community, contributing to their socio-economic development.
He explained that the commissioning comes at a time when there is a strong call for action on promoting safe and sustainable energy solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse emissions.
“One of the critical sectors that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu immediately prioritised upon assumption of office is the power sector,” he said. “His administration is fully committed to living up to this charge and has shown and demonstrated this commitment with this power project being operationalised today,”.
He noted that the REF has so far aided the deployment of over 50 solar mini-grids nationwide, providing clean energy access to hundreds or thousands of Nigerians, adding that the REA remains poised to delivering its mandate on serving the unserved and underserved Nigerians with clean, safe and reliable energy.
Earlier, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, said that the project ties into his adminstration commitment to providing sustainable power supply in Enugu State.
Mbah, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Power, Joe Aneke, commended the REA for choosing Nomeh to benefit from the project, which according to him, will further boost economic development in the area.
